I however don't have any high standards to maintain so here we go.

I am finding it a little hard to get started. I think it's meant to be five things that people don't know about me, which is a bit hard as I'm not exactly introverted.  But then again Al didn't have any new info in his, so here we are;

1. I have completed two years of a Bachelor of Arts at UQ. My majors were Philosophy and Classics(Latin and Classical Greek) I loved the campus at St Lucia but not the traveling to and from it, and I would have enjoyed studying more if I didn't feel the pressing need to get a job at the end of it. I had originally wanted to study Arts/Law but was side tracked by Arts and eventually decided to throw it all in and return to my original love of technology. I would still like to complete my degree and as I have mentioned if I move to Canberra I would like to take advantage of that to finish it at ANU.

2. When I first started to 'court' my girlfriend Lauren I was petrified that I might have been guilty of sexually harassing her. I met her at work when I fixed her computer one day. After that I made a point of asking her if she wanted to come to after work drinks but she always politely declined. This state of affairs might have gone on for some time but my flat mate Lara told me that I should ask her to lunch. I emailed her asking her to lunch (I am such a coward when it comes to these things) and she didn't reply. As I had never attended the traditional corporate induction until she replied three weeks later I was petrified that I was going to be sued for sexual harassment.

3. I am a monarchist. I don't see any reason why we need an Australian president, and in fact I like the idea that I can't be the head of state. It really removes so much pressure from your life, you need never be told "You could be the president when you grow up!" And the fact is if we follow Americas lead in terms of a republic which would seem likely (and somewhat vulgar) then you wouldn't have any chance of becoming president anyway unless you had at least 20 or 30 million dollars in your well connected political family.

4. I read historical detective stories. It's a bit of a niche I know but I do like them.

5. I meditate every day or so, I find that it calms me down immensely and allows me to step back from my life. I would hesitate before saying I'm a Zen Buddhist as I think that has some horrible poseur connotations, and I think that it is more of a philosophy than a religion, but it actually affects me in a way that my Anglican upbringing didn't.

There you go five things about me

Podcasts Grad Programs Sci Fi and generally what I'm up to

So it's late and in the absence of anything more rigorous than a university summer semester I have started to become nocturnal once again. This has some advantages in that I can keep tabs on late night TV (what the fuck is going on with the quiz shows, I mean I know I'm not the first person to mention them but come on how can you find something worse than infomercials???)

I have also decided to keep this blog updated more regularly as I am just conceited enough to think that people might want to know what I'm up to. But I'm also certain that in the future blogging will be quite useful in a business sense, and even though it might be hard to see the link between posting AOL database searches and blogging about information security I feel that the more practice you have writing the better your writing will be. And lets face it my writing can only get better!

I had briefly mentioned Podcasts in my last post but I feel that I should elaborate and point out that even if you don't have an ipod you should download iTunes and head to the music store. The breadth of subjects covered is amazing, for the first time sense I left UQ I've been listening to people discussing philosophy on the podcast of the Radio National show 'The Philosophers Zone" I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed philosophy and the pursuit of knowledge. If as I hope I move to Canberra in the future I'm entertaining the fantasy of finishing my undergrad degree in philosophy and classics at ANU, I don't know if I would have time and I know that it wouldn't advance my career but we can all dream!

Which I guess leads me to grad programs; as some people will know I have interviewed in Canberra for a job in the defense department, people probably don't know too much about it but discretion was mentioned in the process so I'm afraid thats all I can really say about it at the moment. Since then I have also been invited to the second round of testing for the DSD graduate program next week. As these are the only jobs that I have applied for at the moment I'm quite pleased with the progress so far. It's also a little awkward for me as I'm finishing in the middle of the year and the grad programs are all geared for the more traditional end of year finish. I've also been tossing up joining the reserves as an officer. At the moment the RAAF are the front runners but Lol doesn't seem to keen, still it's just an idea at the moment.

I guess that the problem with not doing much is that I don't have much to write about... But more will follow!

Different Dao's

I found the Tao of Programming again during one of my morning web wandering sessions, it reminds me of the early Internet (early for me anyways) those halcyon days of 1996 when search engines were a new novelty and 'surfing the web' as a term was used to describe the practice of clicking through links from one page to another. I thought that I would do a mish mash of things that I've been doing over the last couple of weeks, so here goes.

I was lucky enough to receive a sexy new black ipod for Christmas, I've had a 3rd generation white ipod for a couple of years now but my music collection has long since outgrown it's 20 gigabytes of space, and the fact that I couldn't carry all my music around at one time meant that more often than not I just didn't use it at all. My new 80gb neatly solves this problem and should allow me some breathing space before I have to upgrade again.

It wasn't all smooth sailing though, my music collection resides on my Windows desktop and getting my iPod to work on it was a frustrating exercise. When I say getting it to work I really mean attempting to as I eventually had to pack it in and instead transfer my 50gb of music to my Mac laptop, where as is the Apple way it 'just worked'

Anyways the upshot of all of this is that I've been listening to a lot more new music. One of my recent finds is Gary Jules, perhaps rediscovery is more accurate, his song "Mad World" probably isn't instantly recognisable but you would have heard it on an ad or two recently or perhaps on one of the new years retrospectives. I first heard it in Donnie Darko and both the movie and song touched me more than usual. And it's funny because I think it's the lyrics that really get to me, and it turns out that it is actually a cover of a Tears for Fears song! I've been listening to it on a continuous loop and I never do that with songs. I usually prefer the whole album listening method. The film clip for the song is here

Podcasts are another revelation or rediscovery the iTunes store has such huge selection of podcasts everything from Chaser videos to a weekly rap up of stories from The Economist (My current favourite new source apart from the BBC) - I can see reading this again in half an hour and thinking I sound like a pretentious twat. Pretentious twat sounds quite pretentious now actually, getting recursive here..... Ricky Gervais has 3 free podcasts up at the moment that are worth listening to, very funny show with his co writer Steven Merchant and their mate Karl Pickering who I feel manages to steal the show with his deadpan act.

I think I'll leave this here for the moment and hopefully come back tomorrow and continue....

Workbloggin

This has to be seen to be believed, you can search through the AOL database of their user's searches. To answer Lil's question I have many stories about my non-english speaking group, and one answer; the one that the other Chinese thought "had a different accent" and would avoid somewhat, well it turns out she was from Taiwan, as opposed to my other three who were from Beijing and Shanghai, which I believe was the cause of the tension. How's that for a run on sentence?

This Taiwanese girl ( I was never totally sure) had the most amazing moustache, I mean better than I could ever grow and possibly on par with Robbs facial hairiness, Oh and Yaya from Beijing (cool name huh?) well he was so quiet in person, and probably the best of the Chinese in terms of working, whenever I would say in an email "We can do this!" he would reply "Yes Fight It!!!!!!' Which I always found rather endearing. Their english was always patchy, I looked over some of their reports and I'd say they were probably grade 5 standard. It seemed that tense was the thing that always tripped them up and they all had excellent vocabularies which I found odd. Perhaps they learned their english by memorising nouns..... I did lose a little respect when I found out that wealthy Chinese people in the PRC send their kids to english lessons from around age 4, I mean I hope that I would have made some more progress if I was in their situation.

Neways Not much else to report, I haven't started freaking out about exams yet, but I think I might still be basking in the glow of handing in a 200 page assignment today, 70 Hours it's taken we estimate, well probably about 140 Man hours.

Glad to get rid of that monster.

Maybe more interesting posts to follow.

Random Linkage Time

So it’s Friday afternoon and I have another crypto exam tomorrow so I’ll be lazy and resort to posting some interesting links of the week

First cab off the rank is something I’ve only just found, apparently it has been like this for about three weeks so apologies if I’m a little slow

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=brisbane,+australia&t=h&om=1

apparently Google maps has finally made it too Brisbane Australia (other parts of Australia too)

And this one courtesy of the Australian 2600 List the whole Black pages – grey pages thing seems to be heating up again with a flurry of new reverse look up directories. I was with the two other guys and about to write an email to the Law guy so he could put a description of the project for a business proposal, so asked one of the Maths guys to ask the other for a brief description of how the system works and he launches into a spiel about our messaging protocols and the system architecture, I interrupted and pointed out that we shouldn’t confuse the law guy, the second Maths guy stops for a second and without missing a beat says

“Hmm tell him it’s magic”

First blog with word 2007 beta

I know this is Saturday night and honestly I’m just about to go out to dinner with the girlfriend, (whom I had better pick up quickly or she may be an ex girlfriend soon) but I had to try this out….. you know much as it pains me to say it Microsoft are turning out much better software, which is good because it provides some incentive for Apple and the others, quite a few of the anti Microsoft complaints are just dated now, I mean the horrible business practices are still there, but you know one step at a time.

Powerpoint powerpoint powerpoint

About to head off for a presentation at uni, I'm delivering it with 4 non-english speakers so it should be fun! I'm talking about Extreme Programming, a methodology I've been interested in for quite a while (not just because of the name!) XP just seems right, as opposed to some of the other methodologies which just seem clumsy, however I'm yet to convince a group to take on XP for a project so I don't have any real experience with it, and I do see how it could have issues in a project management sense. However a journal I was reading last week said that even MS was using scrum (another agile method) to speed up release time, so there may be more widespread adoption of XP and other agile methods in the future.....
Anyway longer posts to come as exams finish up.

Oh and I'm heading back to work in the IT services department, so more stories of fun with users to come I'm sure!

The best error message today

*** Please refresh this page to ensure that you are viewing the correct version ***

OLT is currently functioning normally.

This message was recorded on May 18th 2006 at 11:50 pm AEST

***********************************************************************************

What makes it funny is that the OLT is NOT functioning normally, not at all, and refreshing the page gets - OLT is currently functioning normally. Got to love the devs that came up with that. It never ceases to amaze me that with the number of talented people at QUT, often with lucrative consulting gigs on the side that we have crap like this. Another interesting point, we have a system that displays on LCD monitors around the IT faculty the labs that are booked by classes, and the number of PC's that are not in use. Great in theory right?

Of course except that despite the fact that the system has been in use for over a year, it still doesn't ever show that a room has been booked by a class, despite damming empirical evidence to the contrary. As well as the fact that it will say there are 20 PC's free in a lab only to get to the 8th floor to find out that that was a lie as well. I mean it isn't a really complex system to design or implement, and you would hope that it received SOME testing before being deployed but no that's too much to ask at an edu institution. The funny thing is that it was probably part of a masters thesis, most of our new systems around here are and some are quite funky, but this?

Workblog

I'm back at work after my brief exam induced sojourn, and after a hectic Thursday and Friday that ran into a reasonably large weekend, I've hit a wall of boredom on Monday morning. Which isn't too bad I guess, my pay isn't magically linked to any form of exertion, well anymore than is necessary to avoid the ole chop. Although as a contractor that is slightly more exertion than your less well paid but more secure full time employees. Still all in all I find my state of mind is improved by some action, not necessarily working Saturday and Sunday action, but this is killing me. As an example straight out of office space, the high point of my day so far has been helping a colleague find a missing "Unregulated Asset Evaluation Model" in a database. Wooh! On the positive side in my new Department at least they don't have the same preoccupation with working for no reason, So I can just sit here typing this, where as in my old department I would be doing something depressingly useless, and obviously unnecessary, pointless busywork in another word.

On Another note as I sit here, refreshing Slashdot in the vain hope of a new story on whether or not at some vague point in the future one might be able to put Linux on the new x-box, I've found this gem off crikey apparently Lauchy Murdoch at the one.tel hearings said the phrase 'I can't recall' 205 times, that truly is a Herculean effort worthy of Cheech or Chong. At least he got one thing right, something that my current job in electronic litigation support has taught me well, If your going to do something dodgy, for god's sake don't write it down! That goes for file notes, note pads even post-it notes but especially email. You have no idea how long this stuff hangs around, but at least 7 years for business emails, and it's going to look really bad in court one day trust me. Oh and that also goes for bad jokes chain letters and porn via email.

To add to my boring day, my only co-worker my age today is a raving nut bag. Ian my regular partner in crime at work is on holiday at the moment, which on the plus side means I get to do more interesting techy stuff, but the down side is that instead of an offsider that can talk geek with the best of them I have a different species of geek, well more like a nerd. For a start she is a final year law student, and I don't know why lawyers get cool TV shows and Tech geeks don't, cause in my experience lawyers are nerdier than most programmers by a large strech, don't believe me? Come to Friday night drinks one night. Back to the person in question. She has a few strange habits, on of which is that she makes notes on files in mandarin.... she is Caucasian.... no one else is familiar with mandarin here.... The only Chinese I know is Cantonese I have picked up from Jackie Chan films... so far I've only got the facial expressions but I am working on it.

Anyway I'm back off to check Slashdot, and see what else is happening in the world.

Packlands

No I'm not following Robb's lead with sureal headlines, but instead investigating the odd forum of the same name. I happend onto the site from the most recent Something Awful 'Weekend Web', one of the few SA features that still makes me laugh insanely loudly, and scare Lara when she is in her room. Back to the matter in question, the good people at packlands believe that they are reincarnated wolves, not in the usual 'spiritual' wishy washy "I believe I had past lives" sort way, but in the "I am a fucking wolf" sort of way. When I read the site I am torn between laughing so hard I'm in danger of losing bladder control, and then feeling incredibly sad. I think that some people on this site are mentaly ill, and others are just very sad and confused. I suppose if your life as a human isn't working out and you have a shitty job and no friends then maybe pretending that your a wolf and howling at the moon is one way of escaping your current existence, I'm still not sure that this can explain some of the people on this site "All humans lose in the end... *wags at the thought*" is a a quote from waken. I think one of the reasons that I've spent time going through this site, is that I'm trying to find out what sort of person I really am, I find it very easy to be aloof and removed much of the time, to find other peoples misfortunes faintly amusing and not take them to heart, at othertimes I think that I over compensate and feel far too sad for other people. One day I might laugh at a bum, or tell them to fuck off when they hassle me for change, the next I can't stop thinking about how sad it is that a fellow human can end up in that situation and that no one cares. I know which option is easier, but I'm not sure that I can always live with it. I see this dichotomy in my personality best I feel in this one thread.

There is one thing I would like to say though, these are always to damn late to make any differance and this is no exception.

Thing is, Ebon, I'm sorry that I have lied to you on many counts. I can give you the truth, now that I have nothing to lose *sighs* if I can remember correctly, you asked me what love was, and I gave you a defenition of it...I can honestly not tell you what love is, because I have never felt it except for my parents and other relatives. I have never had a girlfriend, ever, because I remain bottled up and cut myself off from others when I am in public. I do not like to leave my heart open for others to tear out. And, lucky me...I just did to you what I tried to stop from happening to me in the first place. If you are reading this, I know you are angry, and that you think I'm really a human, but just don't think that I'VE given up on what I am. I know I am a wolf, and my idiocy has not and will not change that matter. I've learned a lesson through both of our losses, and damnit, I want to undo the way I learned it. *shakes his head* Why did I do so much with you...honestly, because I thought you were thinking like me *shrugs* I don't know everything, and most certainly not what goes on in your mind. Like you said, youth are blinded, hell, you just proved it right. The point of this thing is, I am sorry...for everything, and if it matters to you, you actually are the only one who understood what the hell it is I've been feeling for the past few years, the only one who could put down a logical reason to it. And I don't want to lose a friend out of my idiocy...but it is your choice on what you decide from this letter, I will accept either, cause it is your decision, I made mine and made the wrong one. I will still be on MSN if you wish to woof still with this ignorant pup here. I already stated I was leaving this place, and I know your rules, so I will stay out, and not come back.

This post makes me feel awful, that a person could feel so unloved and misunderstood, I don't doubt that this person has a severe personality disorder, but to have never had a girl love them? To feel so unloveable that they needed to lie to be accepted, even by such a group of outcasts like this? I don't know exactly where this puts me but I do know that they aren't giving me the same kick anymore. I'm in one of the troughs of an all-nighter the point where logically you know that sleep is counter productive but you WANT it so badly .. Ironic considering that I haven't slept properly in days I'm so stressed about passing these exams.... Actually that's the sleep dep talking it's not within Alanis Morriessette distance of being ironic, I just want these exams to be over so badly. Every semester I tell my self that if I actually study during the semester I wouldn't be in this situation and every time I end up here again.... Just scraping through subjects I should be getting 6's and 7's in. Kind of like when I decided to pull this all nighter crap I knew that I would be here .. in this trough ... in the depths of despair ... Where the feeling that it would be easier to just not turn up to the exam ... And get a similar result in the end, the night is always darkest before the dawn, and I guess this is really just a test of myself a test I need to pass regardless of the exams tomorrow. Bah I'm starting to sound like a lunatic, I have to get back to the study.
<img width='1' height='1'
